USF Police Acquire AEDs

Altra Medical and FireHouse Subs Join Forces to Provide University of Florida Police with Life-Saving AEDs

University of South Florida Police Department’s Training Officer Mark Aristizabal and Sgt. Todd Gregory led the grant writing process, funded by Altra Medical, to acquire 17 Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) for the USF Tampa campus.  USF responds to a minimum of four to six medical emergencies on the Tampa campus daily and has used AEDs six times in the past year.   Their commitment to student safety paid off in 2013 when a female student went into cardiac arrest.  Corp. Ed Lutz quickly responded and applied the AED to administer a shock.  The student was revived and was able to shortly return to school.

Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation provided the funding to pay for 17 Philips HeartStart FRx AED units, nearing the goal of having each patrol car equipped with an AED.   This generous donation of $30,000 helps USF police protect the safety of their students as well as the surrounding Tampa Bay community.  The Foundation, founded in 2005, provides funding for life-saving equipment, disaster assistance and educational opportunities for the first responders and public safety organizations.

Officer Aristizabal met with Altra Medical at the Florida PAC Conference and learned about the availability of grant funding that is specifically designed for law enforcement and worked through the process to obtain funding.   The teamwork of the USF Police Department, Firehouse Subs and Altra Medical gives first-responders the tools they need to save lives.   The Altra Medical team can work with your organization to provide guidance and help through the grant writing process and other customized solutions to help police departments and other organizations obtain the right type of AED.
