Blog - Buy vs Lease AEDs

Should I Lease or Buy an AED?

Posted by

We get questions about whether someone should lease or buy an AED.  The answer is it "depends".  There are two types of leases.  One is a straight year to year lease and the other is a lease to own / purchase agreement.   Leasing is good in several cases:

1)  If your organization doesn't have a large capital budget - eg. some non-profit organizations, gym, etc. and you want to have an AED to protect patrons, staff, leasing is a great way to have the equipment immediately at small monthly payments.

2)  If your organization could change budgets or contracts year to year - such as a condo association, which may hire different security companies from year to year, many times the condo board or security company prefers to lease the equipment rather than an outright purchase.

3)  If you organization is concerned about the technology changing and always wants the latest equipment or would rather deduct the lease as an operating expense rather than a capital purchase, then leases are for you.  Many medical facilities will consider leasing equipment so they can have the latest equipment.

How long should I lease?

How long depends on your time frame, and budget.  Generally a two or four year straight lease will give you the best value as pads are replaced every two years and batteries every four years.  Obviously the longer the lease the lower the payments typically will be and the shorter the lease the higher the payments will be.  But for an AED they typically are pretty reasonable.
