AED Regulations

AED Regulations

Altra Medical provides information and links to many of the AED regulation.  Please visit the page for information on the regulation that you need additional information.

Key Points:

    • Most States also have some type of Good Samaritan Act which provides some indemnification if you preform CPR and use an AED and you are not required to do this as part of your job.
    • The Florida Regulations are listed on the left side of this page.  Florida indemnifies both companies that purchase AEDs and the individual that use AEDs in the Cardiac Arrest Survival Act.    Please note that you must maintain the AED in working order - pads, must be in date, battery must work.
    • Florida does not require training to use an AED provided it is equipped with "audible, visual or written instructions on its use..." - virtually all AEDs talk to you so you would not be required to have training.
    • We strongly recommend you have training so that people know what to do and have confidence to help save the life.
    • The FDA requires a prescription for the purchase of ALL brands of AEDs with the exception of the Philips HeartStart Home Defibrillator/ OnSite Defibrillator for adult use. [This is widely misunderstood.  Some states no longer require a medical director, even thought the FDA does.  They are labeled RX only]
    • Some States and Counties require registration of the AED with the local EMS. Check your local requirements.  It is a good idea anyway regardless, so if someone calls 911 they can assist the caller in how to use it.
